16 Years Age for University Admission Has Not Changed – Senate

16 Years Age for University Admission Has Not Changed says Senate.

The Senate has reaffirmed that the minimum age requirement for admission into Nigeria’s tertiary institutions remains at 16 years, dispelling rumours of any recent changes to this regulation.

Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Adeyemi Adaramodu, clarified the Senate’s stance during an interview in Abuja.

He emphasized that recent comments suggesting an increase in the minimum age to 18 years were merely the personal opinion of a Senator and not reflective of any legislative amendment.

Adaramodu stressed that any alteration to existing admission requirements must undergo the proper legislative process to become legally binding.

The clarification comes in response to statements made by the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, regarding a proposed adjustment of the admission age requirement to 18 years.

Mamman had raised concerns about the maturity level of some prospective university students during a visit to UTME examination centres in Abuja.

While acknowledging the need for students to attain a certain level of maturity before pursuing higher education, Mamman’s proposal has not yet been enacted into law.
