Eligibility Criteria for University of Sydney International Scholarship
To be eligible for the University of Sydney International Scholarship you must:
- Be an international student
- Be enrolled or new
- Have an unconditional offer or be actively pursuing a PhD or master’s degree by research at the University of Sydney; have an outstanding academic record and research potential
- Carry out research in one of the University’s priority research areas
- Not be eligible for an Australia Awards scholarship in the last two years
- Commence a University of Sydney Higher Degree by Research program full-time, or within the first six months of receiving their degree
- Not have previously received this scholarship, unless completing a Master’s degree and now entering a PhD program
- Not hold qualifications equivalent to an Australian research Master’s or PhD
- Not have applied for this scholarship more than 3 times in the last 5 years
- Not receive other Australian Government-subsidized scholarships

Academic transcripts
Current students who previously attended another university must submit official transcripts from all past institutions with their scholarship application, even if these were already provided for admission purposes.
- Master’s degree applicants must provide bachelor’s degree transcripts (or higher) to confirm completion of an undergraduate degree.
- PhD program applicants must provide master’s degree transcripts (or higher) to document that they hold a qualifying graduate degree.
Applicants must provide officially certified transcripts showing their most recently conferred academic degree, with associated grades and grading scheme, with official stamps/seals.
Evidence of publications
Any published work referenced in scholarship application materials must be verified by applicants. Publications cannot be used in the application without proper confirmation documentation. English language requirements
Applicants should note that documentation of English proficiency, such as IELTS, TOEFL or PTE scores, must be submitted as part of the scholarship application. These test results may also need to be provided separately to the University’s Admissions Office as part of requesting admission.

Photocopies of scholarship applications and scanned copies of supporting documents submitted online for admission applications are accepted by the University of Sydney.

Application deadlines
The application deadline means the date by which students must submit all application materials to be considered for the next offer round.
Currently enrolled international students must meet the international deadline to be assessed in the next international round. For example, continuing international students must submit by 21 December 2023 to receive a February 2024 outcome.
Prospective applicants who also want to be considered for a University of Sydney International Scholarship must submit all required materials by the scholarship deadline. Any submissions after 21 December 2023 may be deferred to the next international round with outcomes in November 2024.

- Check the degree programs available and make sure you meet the requirements. Admission is highly competitive. Develop your research interests and see if they match with those of particular academic staff members. Find a possible faculty mentor who can guide you throughout the program and whose research interests align with yours. Just as important as choosing a research topic is finding the right supervisor. Send in a request outlining your background, the topic of your proposed research and why you want that person to supervise you. Attach your CV, transcripts and a 2,000 word research proposal that explains how your work aligns with that of the supervisor.

- Applications will be assessed to determine if an offer is made: acceptance, conditional acceptance (pending English qualification/documents submission), an alternative degree program or rejection (if inadequate documentation).
Adherence to research degree application deadlines is required for scholarship consideration in the same cycle:
- January or March start: Apply by September of previous year
- July or October start: Apply by December of previous year
