About the Umaru Musa Yar’adua University (UMYU)
Umaru Musa Yar’adua University (UMYU) was established in 2006 when Katsina State Government created it as Katsina State University. The university started academic activities in January 2007 with three faculties: Education, Humanities and Natural and Applied Sciences and 16 programmes.
On April 8, 2009 the State House of Assembly passed a law renaming the institution to honour Umaru Musa Yar’adua, the then President of Nigeria and former governor of Katsina State. By 2016 the Faculty of Education had admitted 612 students, a manifestation of its growth and popularity among applicants.
In 2017 Professor Sunusi Mamman was appointed as Vice Chancellor and served until December 15, 2022. During his tenure he supervised the construction of additional hostels and academic buildings which has improved the infrastructure of the university. On May 10, 2023 Professor Shehu Salihu Muhammad became the 5th Vice Chancellor, he is a Professor of Political Science from Usman Danfodio University, Sokoto. Under his leadership the university is moving forward with its academic and administrative activities.
As of February 17, 2025 UMYU has opened its portal for returning undergraduate students to pay school fees and register for 2024/2025 academic session. The registration period is from February 17 to March 16, 2025. Looking ahead the first semester lecture will commence on March 24, 2025 marking the beginning of another academic year. These dates are important for students to plan their academic activities well.
Throughout its existence UMYU has expanded its programmes and infrastructure to provide quality education and contribute to the socio-economic development of Katsina State and Nigeria as a whole.
