Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) in Ile-Ife is one of three universities that Nigeria set up between 1961 and 1962. This decision came after a commission, led by Sir Eric Ashby from Cambridge, submitted a report in September 1960 on the country’s higher education needs for the next 20 years.

On June 8, 1961, the government officially created a Provisional Council for the university, with Chief Rotimi Williams as the chairman. In 1992, they introduced a collegiate system with five colleges, but it didn’t work well and was dropped after two years. However, they kept the Postgraduate College and the College of Health Sciences.

Today, the College of Health Sciences includes the Faculties of Basic Medical Sciences, Clinical Sciences, and Dentistry.

About the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU)

Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) is one of the best universities in Nigeria located in Ile-Ife, Osun State. It was established in 1961 by the government of the Western Region led by Chief Obafemi Awolowo after whom the university was later named. The university officially opened on September 22, 1962 with 244 pioneer students on a temporary site in Ibadan. In 1967 the university moved to its permanent site in Ile-Ife that marked the beginning of its growth academically and infrastructurally.

Initially called University of Ife, the institution was renamed Obafemi Awolowo University on May 12, 1987 in honour of its founder. OAU has made many firsts. In 1975 it was the first university in Africa to establish a Faculty of Pharmacy. In 1984 the university’s Teaching Hospital, Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex (OAUTHC) was one of the biggest and most modern in Nigeria.

OAU’s innovation streak continued when it introduced Nigeria’s first electronic voting system for student union election in 2011. In 2013 OAU launched first Software Engineering degree program in Nigeria. The university celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2012, half a century of academic excellence.

OAU is famous for its modernist architecture designed by Israeli architect Arieh Sharon. It is one of the best universities in Nigeria with a wide range of programs and producing influential people in all sectors.
