About the Imo State University (IMSU)
Imo State University (IMSU) was founded in 1981 by the Imo State Government which then comprised of present Imo and Abia States.
The university was created to provide higher education opportunity for the state numerous qualified candidates who had no access to existing institutions. Initially located in Uturu, IMSU moved to Owerri in 1992 after the creation of Abia State.
Throughout its history, IMSU has achieved many milestones. In 1981, under Governor Sam Mbakwe, the university was created to address the educational needs of the region.
The relocation to Owerri in 1992 marked a new beginning, siting the university in the heart of Imo State.
For 2024/2025 academic session here are the dates to remember:
- November 8, 2024: Returning students are expected back on campus, registration and lectures start November 11.
- November 15, 2024: New students arrive and begin their registration process which ends November 20. Lectures for new students start November 21.
- December 19-20, 2024: Orientation programs for new students.
- February 8, 2025: Matriculation ceremony for new students.
- May 19-24, 2025: Convocation ceremony for graduating students.
- August 22, 2025: Academic session ends, second semester exams.
