About the Ignatius Ajuru University of Education (IAUE)
Ignatius Ajuru University of Education (IAUE) has a long history of significant events. It began on June 14, 1971 as Advanced Teachers’ Training College led by Dr. William Maxwell Jnr., a USAID representative. The institution was set up to address the shortage of trained teachers in Rivers State after the civil war.
On February 25, 1975, the college got autonomous through Edict No. 1 and became Rivers State College of Education. Mr. Emmanuel Aguma, appointed in January 1975, became the first Provost. The college moved to its permanent site in Rumuolumeni in January 1977 and increased its capacity to serve the educational needs of the state.
A big day occurred on March 11, 1978 when the college held its first graduation ceremony and awarded diplomas to 462 students who completed Nigeria Certificate in Education program. In May 1982, the institution admitted its first set of students into the Bachelor of Education degree program in affiliation with University of Ibadan.
The pursuit of academic excellence led to a big transformation on October 20, 2009 when Rivers State House of Assembly passed University of Education Law No. 8 and upgraded the college to a full university. This was to provide more opportunities for quality higher education especially for indigenes of Rivers State. In 2010, the university was named after the late Ambassador Ignatius Ajuru, a former Chairman of the institution’s Governing Council who championed the upgrade of the institution to university status.
Today, IAUE is a testimony to decades of educational development offering a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs across various faculties. Its journey from a training college to a full university is a confirmation of its commitment to serving the educational needs of the society.
