About the Federal University Of Agriculture, Makurdi (FUAM)
The Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi (FUAM), now called Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University, Makurdi (JOSTUM), is one of Nigeria’s top institutions focused on agricultural education, research, and innovation.
It was established on January 1, 1988, by the Federal Government of Nigeria to promote agricultural development and provide quality education in various fields related to food production, technology, and management.
Before becoming FUAM, the institution was initially part of the Federal University of Technology, Makurdi, which was founded in 1980. Later, it merged with the University of Jos as its Makurdi campus in 1984, before gaining full autonomy as an agricultural university in 1988.
Over the years, FUAM expanded its programs beyond agriculture to include engineering, sciences, management, and education, allowing students to explore multiple career paths.
In July 2019, the university was renamed Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University, Makurdi, in honor of Joseph Tarka, a political leader known for advocating for the Middle Belt region. Despite the name change, the university maintains its core mission of advancing agricultural education and research.
Today, FUAM continues to provide high-quality education while playing a major role in agricultural innovation, rural development, and food security in Nigeria. If you are looking for a school that combines practical learning with academic excellence, FUAM is a great choice for shaping your future in agriculture and beyond.
