About the Gombe State University (GSU)
Gombe State University (GSU) is a public university in Gombe, Nigeria. It was established in 2004 by Governor Mohammed Danjuma Goje following a 35-man committee recommendations to have a state owned University. The mission is to produce graduates that will contribute to political, economic and social development.
Professor Abdullahi Mahadi was the first Vice Chancellor from 2005 to 2014. Under his leadership the university witnessed tremendous growth and development. In 2014 Professor Ibrahim Umar who was the Dean of Faculty of Science and Postgraduate School was appointed the second Vice Chancellor. Professor Aliyu Usman El-Nafaty took over as the third Vice Chancellor in 2019 and served until 2024. In October 2024 Professor Sani Ahmed Yauta was appointed the Acting Vice Chancellor.
GSU has programmes in various faculties including Arts and Social Sciences, Education, Environmental Science, Science, Law and Pharmaceutical Sciences. The university has a College of Medical Sciences comprising faculties of Basic Medical Sciences, Basic Clinical Sciences and Clinical Sciences.
The main library named after Professor Abdullahi Mahadi has over 52,000 volumes and 12,000 periodical titles to support students and staff in their academic activities.
In October 2023, several projects funded by Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETfund) were commissioned at GSU. The projects are to improve the infrastructure of the university and make teaching and learning more conducive. Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya said he would continue to work with TETfund to improve facilities at GSU and other state owned higher institutions. He also disclosed plan to relocate GSU to a new campus in Dukku where the Faculty of Environmental Sciences will be housed.
