The first matriculation ceremony held on 8th February 1982 with 408 students in various fields. 29th March 1982 saw the official inauguration of the university with the laying of the foundation stone by Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, the first President of Nigeria.
In 1991, after the creation of Edo and Delta States from the old Bendel State, the institution was renamed Ambrose Alli University in honour of its founder. The university library became fully operational in 1983 with 36,509 volumes.
AAU has added faculties such as Agriculture, Arts, Education, Engineering, Environmental Studies, Law, Life Sciences, Management Sciences, Medical Laboratory Science, Physical Sciences, Social Sciences and College of Medicine.
In 2017, the Lagos chapter of the AAU Alumni Association was launched, expanding the university’s alumni network. In September 2023, the university dissolved its Students’ Union Government following protests over tuition hike and later appointed a caretaker committee to manage student affairs.
There have been changes of leadership with Professor Asomwan Sonnie Adagbonyin as Acting Vice-Chancellor from February 2022 to August 2024 when Professor Samuel Olowo, a medical microbiologist, took over. Throughout its existence, AAU has remained committed to quality education and academic excellence.
