About the University Of Nigeria Nsukka UNN
University of Nigeria (UNN), Nsukka, Enugu State is a federal university in Nigeria. Founded by Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe in 1955 and officially opened on October 7, 1960. UNN is the first indigenous and autonomous university in Nigeria and the first land-grant university in Africa.
The university has three campuses: Nsukka, Enugu and Ituku-Ozalla. It has 17 faculties and 102 departments and offers 108 undergraduate and 211 postgraduate courses.
Some of the key dates in UNN’s history are May 18, 1955 when the law establishing the university was passed and October 17, 1960 when the university started with 220 students and 13 staff. During the Nigerian Civil War (1967-1970) the university was renamed University of Biafra. Since then, UNN has had several vice-chancellors, with Professor Charles Arizechukwu Igwe as the current vice-chancellor since June 2019.
