About the University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED)
UNIMED was established in Ondo City, Nigeria in December 2014 when Governor Olusegun Mimiko signed a bill into law to create a state university of medical sciences.
This was to address the shortage of trained health professionals in the region. In March 2015, NUC accredited UNIMED as Nigeria’s first specialized medical university. Professor Friday Okonofua, a renowned gynaecologist and founder of Women Health and Action Research Centre was appointed the pioneer Vice Chancellor on March 11, 2015.
The university matriculated its first set of students on March 14, 2016 with 234 students in 5 programmes. To further boost medical education and services, Ondo State government established UNIMED Teaching Hospital on August 7, 2018.
This is a tri-complex hospital which merged 7 different hospitals into a single complex located in Medical Village, Ondo and Akure complexes. In March 2020, Professor Adesegun Fatusi, a distinguished public health expert took over as Vice Chancellor from Professor Okonofua.
Under his leadership, UNIMED has continued to expand its academic programmes and infrastructure. By February 2, 2022, the university celebrated its 2nd and 3rd combined convocation with 252 graduates. In June 2024, UNIMED signed Memorandum of Understanding with West African College of Physicians to boost medical training and research.
The university also launched Health Law and Policy Master’s programme and the first semester ended in May 2024. Throughout its existence, UNIMED has remained committed to providing quality medical education and healthcare services and evolving to meet the needs of its community and beyond.
