About the Federal Polytechnic Idah (IDAH-POLY)
Federal Polytechnic Idah located in Kogi State, Nigeria has a great history with many milestones. It was established on 28th November 1977 as Idah College of Technology to address Nigeria’s technological manpower needs. In July 1979 it was one of the seven polytechnics formalized by Decree No. 33.
The institution started with 11 academic staff, 19 senior administrative staff, 86 support staff and 220 students in 5 departments: Civil Engineering, Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgy Engineering and Secretarial Studies (now Office Technology & Management). It operated from a rented building in Idah town and later secured a temporary site in 1977 which was the Government Teachers College, Alloma.
In May 1980, contracts for phase one of the permanent site development were awarded and construction of main buildings, laboratories and workshops started in 1981. By September 1986, the School of Engineering moved to the permanent site and later all academic departments and administrative offices moved to the site.
Now the Federal Polytechnic Idah has 25 departments in 5 schools: Business Studies, Engineering, Environmental Studies, Technology and General & Administrative Studies offering 50 academic programs.
A recent development is the appointment of Dr. Olusegun Adepoju Oniyide as the substantive Registrar on 11th July 2023 for a five-year term.
The polytechnic’s motto “Technology for Self-Reliance” means training of skilled persons that can contribute to Nigeria’s development.
