About the Ekiti State University

Ekiti State University (EKSU) started on March 30, 1982 when the government of Ondo State led by Chief Michael Adekunle Ajasin established it as Obafemi Awolowo University, Ado-Ekiti. The first governing council met on March 30 and 31, 1982 and declared March 30 as the annual foundation day. Shortly after, on March 25, 1983 EKSU held its inaugural matriculation ceremony at the Assembly Hall, Ajitadidun Temporary Campus and admitted its first set of students.

In June 1985, under the military administration of Commodore Michael Bamidele Otiko the name of the university was changed to Ondo State University, Ado-Ekiti. By August 1985 the university relocated from its temporary sites to a permanent campus along Ado-Iworoko Road and that was a bigPlus for the institution. The university continued to grow and added the Faculty of Engineering and the Department of Banking and Finance in 1985/86 session.

The creation of Ekiti State in 1996 made the university to be owned solely by the Ekiti State Government and that led to a change of name to University of Ado-Ekiti in November 1999. Further development in June 2011 saw the merger of three state owned institutions: University of Ado-Ekiti, University of Education in Ikere-Ekiti and University of Science and Technology in Ifaki-Ekiti and that resulted to the present Ekiti State University, Ado-Ekiti.

EKSU has grown so much over the years. From 136 students in 1983 to 724 in 1983/84 session with the addition of the Faculty of Education. 1991/92 session saw the establishment of the Faculty of Law and by 2001 the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences was introduced and that increased the number of faculties to 8 and students to 10,000. Today EKSU has over 25,000 students across various programmes and that’s a testimony to our commitment to quality education.
