About the Delta State Polytechnic, Otefe-Oghara (DESPO)
DESPO started on November 12, 2002 when the Delta State Government under James Onanefe Ibori established it. The school was meant to give students technical education and practical skills. In January 2003, DESPO admitted its first set of students and started academic activities. This was to make higher education more accessible in Delta State.
In 2007, DESPO graduated its first set of students. That was a sign of progress. In 2010, National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) gave DESPO full approval. That was when its courses met national standard. In 2012, the school added new programmes in engineering, business studies and applied sciences. That gave students more options to study different fields.
By 2018, DESPO was rated the best state polytechnic in Delta State and 7th in Nigeria by NBTE. That showed the school was serious about education. In 2020, the school introduced entrepreneurship programme to teach students how to start and run a business. That helped students to gain skills to succeed in the labour market.
In December 2024, DESPO got approval to run 16 new courses, bringing the total to 46. That gave students more options. Over the years, DESPO has been giving students hands-on training and preparing them for modern job while maintaining high standard.
