ASUU Holds Crucial NEC Meeting to Decide on Strike Action

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has commenced a crucial National Executive Council (NEC) meeting at the University of Ibadan (UI) to discuss contentious issues affecting members‘ welfare and the union’s face-off with the Federal Government.

The meeting, which started yesterday, may alter academic activities in the Nigerian University System (NUS) based on decisions reached by various branch congresses.

ASUU has accused the Federal Government of failing to implement the 2009 agreement and withholding salaries of members.

The meeting will discuss resolutions reached at branch congresses, including the possibility of a strike action.

Recall that ASUU had postponed the decision to declare a strike twice this year due to last-minute interventions by the Federal Government.

The union’s demands include:

  • Renegotiation of the 2009 agreement between the FG/ASUU
  • Payment of withheld salaries to members
  • Non-payment of earned academic allowances
  • Victimisation of members in some state universities

The NEC meeting, which will end later today, may decide on a strike action if the Federal Government fails to address the union’s demands.
