It may seem overwhelming having hundreds of choices to pick from, but having the internet at your disposal can really empower you to find online schools that best fit your needs.  You just have to know what to look for.

The first step in finding an online school is to make sure they are accredited institutions.  The worst thing that could happen is that you invest time into schooling only to find out through a potential employer that your school was not accredited.  So do your homework upfront.  Find out what state the online school operates out of and then find what agency grants accreditation there.  The six regional accreditation agencies are New England, North Central, Middle States, Southern, Western, and North West.

The second step to find good online schools is to make sure their instructors are qualified in their area of teaching.  Some schools have been known to do a less than stellar job when hiring so it is up to you to ask the school and even the teacher for their qualifications.

The third step you should take to help you find a reputable online school for your needs is to make sure they have been around for a while.  Usually this will be an indicator of how well suited the schools are to tailor the teaching approaches to the online formats.  You can also try a more direct approach and ask actual school alumni for views on their educational experience at the school.

Believe it or not an online school should have good customer service.  Reputable online schools will make technical assistance available seven days a week and will assign you your own personal advisor to guide you throughout your time at the school.

Online schools should also have financial aid available to its students.  Fuel and housing are the only things that have gone up these days.  The cost of education is constantly on the rise and a good deal is hard to find. Online schools will provide students with financial bridges to help them get to the other side.  This includes financial aide counselors, scholarship opportunities, and loan options.  Students may not always know the resources available to them and it should be the job of an online school to present those options to them.

Students should also find a school that keeps it simple.  Many schools are trying to launch new technological sources to conduct online schooling such as pod casts, video conferencing and streaming.  In the process, however, they are excluding students who many not have the tech capability to participate in such classes.  Even worse, students may enroll in classes naively thinking they have the computer equipment necessary when they really don't.  The online school formula should simply be websites, bulletin boards, and e-mail.  Anything more than that and you will want to make sure you have all the equipment you need to take advantage of the technology the school offers.

Finally, make sure that the teacher-student ratio is small.  Just like in conventional classes, the more students a teacher must tend to the more the quality of the education diminishes.  This is one case where less is definitely more...for your dollar.
