What Photography Universities Can Offer You

You got your first camera when you were 9 years old and that pretty much cemented the idea of going to school focused on teaching you photography.  But what can you expect from a Photography University?  Now that you are actually ready to enroll in one there are some things that you should keep in mind for your journey, things you should expect.  Yes, most of your experience is going to be a positive one just because of the nature of the degree.  But don't just focus on the fun aspects of it since there are important decisions to be made.

What Programs and Classes Should You Take?

There are so many university photography programs to choose from that it may be overwhelming.  First consider what area you will focus on while at a photography university.  Some of your choices include fashion, landscape, portrait, or photojournalism.  Do you want to travel or stay in one area?  Do you prefer artistic renditions or complementing hard news?  Do you like the idea of routine or enjoy spontaneous scheduling?  Answering these questions will help you decide which area you will flourish in more and help you select the appropriate photography classes.

Digital vs. Classic File Format

A university of photography can offer you two main paths.  You need to consider   whether you want to work in a digital format or the classic film format.  The equipment used and the manipulation of either one of these are very different and can be determined by just how much monies you are willing to invest.  Digital equipment tends to be more expensive upfront but the development of film can also balloon your budget in the long run.

What's Your Budget

Speaking of budget you should consider whether you will have the allocated funds to purchase your own equipment.  There are some retailers that will give you special student rates and some that will let you do installment plans.  Many students attending a photography university are given permission to check out school equipment.  This is a great option for those not financially able to make purchases, but be prepared to check equipment back in at the end of projects for other students to use. 

Photography Equipment

If you are going to opt for using the equipment from the university then make sure the school's kept up with industry developments.  Older equipment can be fascinating to handle but in this industry that just does not cut it.  You want the most modern equipment that will give you the best chances at capturing what you envision in its purest form. 

Also inquire what type of computer and film development labs the photography university has available to students.  Setting up a dark room in your already cramped dorm room may not be feasible. Nor will purchasing half dozen photography manipulating software programs that exist since these can be pretty pricey.  Schools with good photography programs will invest heavily on these two factors giving students the freedom and availability to complete their projects with the right resources.

The Faculty is Important

Research the qualifications of the faculty, and sign up for classes with the teachers that have the best credentials in your area of interest.  Wouldn't it be great to have a passion for portrait photography and be able to learn side-by-side from the great Anne Leibovitz?

Do Your Homework

Essentially, most of what you can expect from a photography university can be creatively gratifying, but you need to make sure and do your research so that you are not blind sided when you start school.  Attending a photography school can be expensive, so you wan tto make sure you do your homework and set yourself up for success.
