Graphics Designer Interview: Stephanie Campbell
In this interview, we discuss day-to-day life as a graphic designer with Stephanie Campbell. Stephanie is currently living in Vermont.
How long have you been a graphic designer?
I've been a graphic designer for about 9 years.
What type of job do you have as a graphic designer?
My main job is as an in-house designer for a medical software company. I have also freelanced quite a bit and continue to do so when time allows.
What are the pros and cons of working for someone else versus freelancing?
The pros of working for someone else include being paid regularly and having to take on less liability. The cons are that there are set hours or a set schedule (which could be a pro for some), and that I can't pick or choose the work I want to do so at times it can be mundane (not as creative).
Where did you go to design school?
I went to the University of Vermont and studied Fine Arts so I that I would have an art background. Soon after graduation I bought a nice Mac and started learning Photoshop, Quark and Illustrator. I had this somewhat terrible job at a local newspaper designing car ads. That job was short lived but taught me a lot about the basics in printing. I used Quark at the time for page layout.
Do you feel that a design degree prepared you for being a graphic designer in the real world?
An art background helps for sure.
Did you work as an intern or an apprentice during or after school? If so, what additional strengths did you gain?
I did intern at a local small design business. I produced a bunch of ads for them. It was helpful and I think looks good on the resume.
What kind of advice would you give to aspiring graphic designers?
I've been out of the job market for a while now as I've been at my current job for 8 years. But from what I read and hear, it's tough out there. I think being up-to-date with the latest design trends, knowing the software, and most importantly being creative, open-minded and flexible is key.
