Furthermore, after deciding which area of art drives your creative process and researching potential art schools, it is important to enroll in a program that ultimately awards you with an applicable degree.  Do you prefer a four year program where you'll obtain a specialized design degree as well as a broad liberal arts education?  Or would you rather complete a 2-year program and focus intensely on your related strength?  How will various degrees help you market your skills, find employment and reach your potential?

Following is a list of possible art degrees and programs:

  • Art Certificate Program: Art schools that offer certificate programs in your chosen field allow you to concentrate in your area of artistic interest. Some offer certificate programs in conjunction with their undergraduate or graduate programs, aimed to compliment your major. Others offer certificates in twelve month intensive programs where the only classes offered relate directly to your artistic interest and ultimately to your awarded certificate. In any case, a certificate program provides you with special preparation and education that will further your talent and broaden your creative skill set.
  • Associate's Degree: Depending on which art school you attend or which program you choose, there are a variety of reasons to pursue an associate's degree. For example, the Associate of Science in Interactive and Graphic Art (ASIGA) degree can prepare you with the tools and knowledge to pursue a career in graphic design or computer programming. In such a program, you can take a wide variety of classes including graphic design theory, animation, web design, color theory, digital or film photography, and fashion, to name a few. Most associate's degree programs last two years and open doors to a wide variety of possible careers in art.
  • Bachelor's Degree: You love to draw, you redecorate your bedroom every week, and you also love the intellectual pursuit of academic learning. If you are inclined towards a specific area of art yet also desire to engage in a challenging and broad education, a bachelor's degree is for you! Most bachelor's degrees are obtainable in four years, and some cater to artists and designers, allowing you to specialize in a specific area of interest. Some art schools even offer online programs, where you can achieve a degree in areas like fashion and retail management, graphic design, or animation and media arts.
