The Reality of Film Schools
So you want to go to film school? Great. Let's assume you successfully prove to the admissions department that they should pick you over the thousands of other candidates. When you're done drinking the bubbly in celebration of that great feat, do me a favor and pinch yourself in preparation of the reality that's about to set in. We're not trying to scare you, but rather prepare you for what is ahead.
Top Film Schools are Challenging
Like other undergrad programs, can be just as challenging as the more academic choices out there. The difference is that some students make the mistake of thinking about the glamour of the industry rather than the sweat that goes into working behind the cameras. So hold on for your reality check.
Price of Production and Editing
Film editing schools and film production schools can be expensive. Beyond tuition, being able to bring your class projects to fruition can command a hefty sum of funds. Whether you are studying to become a film editor or a film producer, most schools will provide you with the audio, cameras, and editing equipment you'll need but not the film or developing materials and certainly not craft services for your shoots. But where there's a will there's a way. Most film service companies do offer discounted materials and services to students and extra film canisters left over from feature shoots. Just remember to flash your school ID to reap in the benefits. Local restaurants will also donate food and drinks in exchange for school publicity or mention in your film.
Film Schools Demand Long Hours
Even the best film schools require long hours. Not everything is on location. You are required to be in the classroom and learn about concepts and history, and you're regularly tested on this new wealth of knowledge. Add to this load a minimum 12 hour shooting schedule and you've got yourself one authentic film school student. Sleep is no longer a daily occurrence but with good coordination and discipline you won't even miss it. The chance to see your projects breathe life on the screen makes up for the lack of REM.
Film Students Need Thick Skin
Film school is not for the sensitive. You're at your most vulnerable when you choose to develop your thoughts for others to see. They can either love it or hate it. It's up to you to take in the latter with dignity. The great thing about film school is that you're able to get input that will help you craft your style in the long run. Not only that, the critics many times are faculty that have themselves worked in the industry and can give you valuable feedback as it pertains to the real film world.
Schools breed Competition
Film schools are competitive. The environment breeds it from the very beginning. You had to claw your way to the top and now you have to do the same to stay there because of the limiting slots for success. That's okay, you just have to remember to persevere in the face of adversity. Only those with the greatest tenacity will have access to the school's equipment when they want it and only those with the right endurance will make the dazzling film that will get into the school's film festival. Now give yourself a pep talk and go make some great films!
